I am delighted to present Trajan's Triumph: MAGA Aurea, a visionary mixed-media drawing. Completed in early 2026, this piece masterfully fuses the grandeur of 2nd Century BC Roman architecture with potent symbols of modern American patriotism, creating a timeless narrative of liberty, justice, and enduring strength. Measuring 18x24 inches, the work employs pencil, selective colored pencil accents, and gold leaf highlights on paper, evoking the opulence of imperial Rome while infusing it with a distinctly 21st-century ideological fervor.
At the composition's heart lies a majestic canal, reminiscent of the Tiber River or Trajan's engineered waterways, teeming with Roman triremes and smaller vessels that symbolize naval prowess and exploration. Flanking this aquatic artery are towering temples and colonnades, their pediments adorned with golden inscriptions such as "MAGA," "LIBERTAS," "JUSTITIA," and "VERITAS"—Latin virtues reimagined through the lens of American exceptionalism. The central statue, evoking the Statue of Liberty but clasping a fasces and torch, stands as a beacon of republican ideals, while equestrian figures and robed sages on pedestals (bearing mottos like "IN DEUM CREDIMUS" and "SEMPER FIDELIS") pay homage Republican leaders and military fidelity.
The selective coloring technique is particularly striking: the vibrant turquoise of the canal contrasts with the monochromatic stonework, drawing the eye inward and symbolizing the flow of ideas across eras. Flags—including the American Stars and Stripes, a Roman Flag, and others—flutter atop structures and ships, suggesting a harmonious blend of national identities under a unified vision of prosperity.
The distant cityscape, with its domed edifices and verdant hills, fades into a hazy horizon, imparting a sense of infinite legacy, much like the Roman Forum's extensive ruins.
Thematically, this artwork resonates as a triumphant allegory for renewal and resilience. Drawing from Emperor Trajan's era of expansion and justice, parallels with the "Make America Great Again" ethos, portraying a golden age (Aurea) where classical principles underpin contemporary governance. Subtle weathering on the marble surfaces and lively figures milling about add authenticity, transforming the scene from static history into a living manifesto.
In a post-2024 political landscape, Trajan's Triumph: MAGA Aurea stands as a bold statement piece, ideal for display in governmental halls or collections celebrating American heritage. The work not only honors the past but inspires the future, reminding viewers that empires—ancient or modern—are built on unyielding truths. This is art that bridges epochs, inviting reflection on what it means to triumph in the name of liberty.
